Chapter Seventeen

The next day was crazy. Grace showed up with my costumes and two other people in tow: Alizeyah, the Dragon who’d taken over my job as Harbinger, and a disgruntled Pixie named Dani. Alizeyah was nothing like what I expected. She was short and curvy, two things I definitely didn’t associate with being an Elf. Her hair was pale blonde and her eyes were a stormy silver and violet. Her most unusual trait, though, was her skin. It seemed to sparkle with a white ethereal glow whenever the sun hit her. Scales, maybe?

Dani, on the other hand, was exactly what you expected in a Pixie. She was short, beautiful, and sassy. No matter how she tossed her hair it always fell perfectly down her back. I tried repeatedly to call on wind, but nothing disturbed her effortless look. On multiple occasions Alizeyah had to physically remove a book from her hands in order to get her attention.

I finally looked at Grace in concern. “And what are they going to do?” I was questioning their ability to do more than crack jokes, dish out sarcasm, and read, since that was all they did the entire rehearsal.

Grace shrugged. “Alizeyah is going to do her elemental thing and Dani is contractually obligated to wear a ridiculous costume if Alizeyah is. I can’t say she has always used her power as a princess for good. Sometimes I think she uses it just for her own amusement.”

My blood boiled in my veins and all feelings of being cold disappeared. I turned to Alizeyah and threw my arms up. “I’m the daughter of Winter. I am born of pure elemental energy. Your services are not needed, so you can leave.”

She tilted her head to the side and considered me quietly for a moment. “I don’t want to. I love this parade. I’ve grown up watching it every year from here in the Northeast, and if you don’t like it you can go.”

“Excuse me,” I snapped. “Who do you think you are? I cannot abide people who have power and don’t use it responsibly.”

Dani raised her hand to interject something, but my glare caused her to lower it. Grace even started to say something, but thought better of it upon seeing my face. The Princess, however, was not deterred. “I’m sorry,” she said with such contrite politeness it made me lower my guard – but it shouldn’t have. “While you’ve been gone with your amazing gifts, doing whatever it is you’ve been busy doing, others have come forward to pick up the slack. I don’t know what rock you were hiding under while I was stopping wars, saving lives, helping rule a kingdom, and generally doing the impossible.”

“You don’t know what I’ve been through,” I argued.

“And I don’t honestly care. Stuff it, Elsa!” She stormed away.

I turned and looked at Grace. “Elsa?”

“Remind me to have some movies added to your stocking stuffer list,” she said before she turned to chase down a runaway Princess.

“If I’m lucky I’ll only have to see her this weekend and at Justin’s wedding,” I mumbled to myself.
